An ESL/TESOL teacher is one who helps students become proficient in the English language. ESL stands for “English as a Second Language” and TESOL stands for “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.” The two acronyms are often interchanged with one another. There is a growing demand for ESL/TESOL teachers in the United States, as immigration is at a high and doesn’t seem to be slowing. In order to help ESL speakers to integrate with the culture and obtain a great education, it is important to cater to their unique needs.

In order to become an ESL/TESOL teacher, one must obtain an education degree with a focus in the specialization. An undergraduate degree can be obtained with a focus in ESL/TESOL instruction. This degree will provide a broad-based education in modern pedagogical techniques, as well as specialized courses on the various needs of ESL students. One must possess a high school diploma or GED to be accepted into an undergraduate education degree program. Upon completion of an undergraduate degree, a graduate can either pursue an advanced degree in ESL/TESOL instruction or complete a state licensure exam and start a teaching career.

An advanced degree, such as a master’s or PhD, can certainly open more doors than an undergraduate degree. Not only will it intensely focus on ESL/TESOL teaching and better prepare a graduate for the field, some private schools and colleges will only hire those with a post-graduate degree. Those with a master’s degree or doctorate can become college professors with a specialization in instructing ESL students. Gaining entrance to a graduate degree program is challenging. One must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and prove one’s continued excellence in academics. Collecting positive references from prior instructors is also encouraged, as it can help one’s chances of being accepted into the program.

Upon completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree, official state licensure can be pursued. This will make a graduate an officially licensed teacher within the state, opening many opportunities for employment. There is a large demand for ESL/TESOL teachers all over the country. From early education to higher education, students of all ages are struggling due to culture differences and language barriers. Teachers who are bilingual have an advantage in the work place and those who are multilingual will be in even higher demand. What is very important, however, is one’s ability to break through cultural differences and adequately help students from many different backgrounds to understand English.

ESL teachers can work in public schools, private schools and even as private tutors. Starting salaries can differ from one environment to the next, but the median salary for this occupation is desirable and there is plenty of room for quick growth as a teacher gains experience. Those with a few years of experience and an advanced degree can make a very comfortable living. The education industry needs more qualified professionals that specialize in ESL instruction and there has never been a better time to pursue a future as an ESL/TESOL teacher.
