If Iowa is your teaching destination of choice, you can easily become certified to teach there. Getting a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is the first step. Once you have your degree, you just need a few more pieces in place to achieve licensure and get that job you want.

Requirements for licensure in Iowa state that you must have a Bachelor’s degree. Additionally, you must complete an approved teacher preparation program and an approved human relations component. You must also have completed the requirements for a teaching endorsement, which can be found here. Finally, you must have taught for less than 160 days in the past five years. This Initial license is valid for two years.

Once you’ve obtained your license, you will need to find employment at a school in Iowa. Des Moines Public Schools boast high graduation rates and some of the highest academic achievements in the state. The schools in Davenport offer small teacher to student ratios in a diverse and progressive educational environment. Cedar Rapids and Sioux City both have schools with solid academic success and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Having successfully taught in Iowa for two years, you will need to apply for a Standard license that is valid for five years. During those five years, you should be taking six semester credit hours of college courses or the equivalent in Iowa staff development courses to apply towards the requirements for your license renewal.
