Teaching in Mississippi is a pretty straightforward task if this is your goal. If you earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and completed an approved teacher preparation program, you have taken the first step to getting licensed to teach.
Follow these steps to gain licensure in Mississippi. In addition to getting the appropriate education, you will also need to successfully complete the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching Test and any applicable Praxis II specialty area tests. You will need to submit a sealed, official transcript from your school and original copies of your test scores. The license you receive will be valid for five years.
Upon receiving licensure, you will want to find a teaching position in a Mississippi school. The largest district in Mississippi, Jackson Public Schools boasts that 87% of the schools rate as successful, exemplary, or superior and strives to attract and maintain high quality teachers and staff. The cities of Gulfport and Biloxi are served by three school districts. Gulfport School District and Biloxi Public Schools serve each of their respective cities while Harrison County School District spans both cities. Hattiesburg schools boast well-qualified teachers throughout the district and enjoy the resources that come with two institutes of higher learning in the community.
After teaching for five years in your school, you will be required to renew your teaching license. In order to qualify for renewal, during the previous five years, you will need to have taken 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or three semester hours of college courses and five CEUs or six semester hours of college courses, or completion of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards process.
