Get Your Utah Teaching Certification
Becoming licensed to teach in Utah can be an easy process. If you complete your Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and complete an approved teacher preparation program, your information will be sent to the State Office of Education for licensure.
In addition to your information from your school, you must also submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. Upon approval, you will be issued a Level 1 license to teach in Utah. A Level 1 teacher must enroll in the Entry Years Enhancement Program (EYE) where new teachers receive support and mentoring during their first three years. During these three years, you will also need to take the Praxis II – Principles of Learning and Teaching assessment.
When you receive your Level 1 license, you will need to find employment in a Utah school. Salt Lake City School District is the oldest district in Utah. It offers many neighborhood schools as well as choices for alternative education such as the International Baccalaureate or academies for art, health, or math, engineering, and science. Jordan School District is the largest district in Utah and covers over 250 square miles of south Salt Lake County including the fourth largest city in Utah, Sandy. The emphasis on quality education in this district is evidenced by the many achievements of the students and the high teacher standards. Granite School District is the second largest district in Utah and includes West Valley City among its area of over 250 square miles. With an emphasis on athletic, academic, and artistic achievement, this district enjoys a well-rounded educational opportunity for students and teachers alike. Provo City School District promotes effective teaching and efficient schools through programs such as their dual immersion and academically gifted programs alongside more traditional teaching methods.
After teaching for three years with your Level 1 license and completing your EYE, you will move to a Level 2 license. A Level 2 license is good for five years and requires that you earn 100 points for work experience (points are weighted according to number of career hours worked) and 100 professional development points for renewal.
