Get Your Washington Teaching Certification

If you would like to become a teacher in Washington, the most direct way to do so is by completing your Bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university with an approved teacher preparation program. Going this route guarantees that you meet all the course requirements and assessments necessary to receive certification to teach in Washington.

In addition to the education requirements for certification, you will also need to submit your assessment scores and fingerprints for a criminal background check. Upon approval, you will be issued an Initial Certificate that is good for three years. Out-of-state applicants will need to submit the same information, but they may be required to undergo review of their qualifications.

After receiving your certification, you will need to find employment at a Washington school. Seattle Public Schools believes that academic achievement is best accomplished through a combination of strong leadership and quality teachers, student accountability, and the involvement of families and the community. Success of the many high-quality programs in the district supports this claim. Spokane Public Schools is a district dedicated to helping students learn through the efforts of "building supportive, positive relationships in a culture of academic excellence." Both Tacoma and Vancouver schools offer a wide range of quality programs to enhance student learning while also providing ample opportunities for community support and connection with the students, teachers, and schools.

Once you have been teaching with your Initial Certificate for a minimum of two years, you will upgrade to the Residency Certificate. This certificate is good for five years and will require 15 quarter or 10 semester hours at an accredited college or university for renewal.
