Get Your Wisconsin Teaching Certification

If you want to teach in Wisconsin, the first thing you should do is complete your Bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university with an approved teacher preparation program. Your program will ensure you get all the requirements for licensure in Wisconsin. If you completed your education out of the state, you can still apply, but you may need to submit your credentials for review to make sure you have met all state requirements.

After having completed your education in Wisconsin, you will receive a recommendation from your school for licensure. After this recommendation, you will need to submit an application form in order to start the process. You will also need to have your fingerprints taken in order to submit to a criminal background check. Upon approval, you will receive an Initial Educator Teaching License. During your first years of teaching with your Initial license, you will be required to complete a Professional Development Plan. This can take up to five years to complete.

Once you have received your licensure, you will need to find a teaching position with a school in Wisconsin. Milwaukee Public Schools offers high academic standards among their schools that range from traditional to charter to partnership schools. District surveys indicate that parents feel their children are well-prepared with their education in these schools. Madison Metropolitan School District boasts a "long history of excellence" that includes numerous National Merit Scholars as evidence of the quality education provided. Green Bay Area Public School District believes in approaching each student’s needs uniquely in an environment of community support. Programs in this district range from 4-Year Old Kindergarten to Gifted and Talented to Teen Age Parent Program. Kenosha Unified School District No. 1 offers a Technology Academy, elementary charter schools, and a Head Start Child Development center alongside traditional classrooms to provide a great education for the students.

After having taught for a minimum of three years in Wisconsin with your Initial Educator Teaching License, you will need to upgrade to a Professional License. This license is valid for five years. In order to renew your Professional License, you will need to complete the required amount of semester credits (which are currently six semester hours for teachers who graduated before 9/1/04).
